Biographical or historical data

The term 'Mouvement féderaliste européen' refers to the French section of the Union of European Federalists (UEF), the supra-national organization which includes the federalist movements of the different countries of the European Community and those existing in Norway and Switzerland. The MEF is the current heir of a movement formed in 1953. Following the Dijon congress (December 1973), the French MEF was chaired by Henri Cartan. It publishes a bulletin: 'Fédéralisme européen', and claims to be independent of political parties, with the aim of meeting the objective stated in its statutes independently: the promotion of federalism and in particular the creation of a European federation, conceived as a necessary step towards a worldwide federation.
