Abstract
"Israeli Politics and the First Palestinian Intifada investigates how the Palestinians in the occupied territories interpreted the deepening domestic Israeli divisions over the continuation of occupation as an opportunity to shake off the military occupation in 1987. In contrast to previous waves of confrontation during the deep-rooted Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the 1987 Intifada is distinguishable by both the social and political circumstances in which it coalesced. This is exemplified in the fact that over a million Palestinians had been put under Israeli military rule, and the unprecedented magnitude of contention Palestinian activists managed to mount and sustain.""Analyzing Palestinian print media articles published throughout the 1970s and 1980s supported by data from interviews with Palestinian grassroots activists and Israeli journalists, this volume examines the reasons for the specific time context during which the Palestinian uprising crystallized."--BOOK JACKET
