The JEF fonds consists of notes and memoranda on the action programmes, campaigns and demonstrations organised by the Young European Federalists (notably European Youth Parliament and International Youth Year), reports and resolutions of congresses, forums and seminars, correspondence with the European Federalist Union, (EFU), the European Movement (EM), the European Coordination Bureau of International Youth Organisations (ECB), the World Federalist Movement (WFM), the Youth Forum (EC Commission), the European Youth Centre and the European Youth Foundation (Council of Europe) and national sections

Biographical or historical data

The Federalist Movement was founded in 1947 in Montreux (Switzerland). It was conceived as the Youth Section of the Federalist Movement and it began its activity in various European towns in 1948. The defeat of the European Defence Community in 1954 caused a major crisis among Federalists, which also affected the JEF. Although JEF sections were active everywhere, no international coordination existed. Several actions in the late sixties, mainly the Campaign for direct election to the European Parliament, led to the creation of the Young European Federalists Europe with the Congress of Luxembourg in 1972. In 1983, JEF had about 10,000 members in 17 countries and was the only major youth organisation whose specific purpose was to work for a United Europe. Actually the Young European Federalists is a supranational, political movement active in most European countries. The action is carried out by organising meetings, conferences and seminars, publishing leaflets, journals, newsletters and magazines, organising campaigns and demonstrations.
