- The fonds consists mainly of documents created or held by Albert Coppé during or after his time as member of the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community and as European Commissioner, as well as his private papers. The first group of documents includes articles published in the Belgian press as well as his academic writings as professor at the Catholic University of Louvain. The second group of documents, the most extensive, is composed of manuscripts produced during his numerous activities as a member and activist of associations and movements. The personal papers include his correpondence for the decade 1920-1930 and a complete set of personal as well as of academic notebooks. The fonds also includes a fine collection of photographs dating from his years as member of the High Authority and as European Commissioner, and two interviews in DVD form (dossier ALC 155)

- Albert Léon Coppé was born to a well-known merchant family in Bruges. He spent his childhood in Belgium and the Netherlands, where he studied commerce and finance as well political and social sciences at the Catholic University of Louvain where he became Professor in 1940. After having participated during the war in the creation of the Belgian political party "Christelijke Volkspartij"(CVP), he collaborated from 1944 in various government ministries . During this time, he began publishing articles in various Belgian newspapers. He participated in the Treaty of Paris negotiations and was nominated Vice President of the High Authority on the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community in 1952. After the fusion of the Executives, he became member of the Commission of the European Communities until 1973, holding the record at the time for longest standing member of the European institutions. From 1974 he worked at the "Générale de Banque" where he held the position of President of its Council of administration. He taught Economic sciences at the Catholic University of Louvain and was member of various pro-European and social movements and associations, such as the Belgian European Movement, the Union of European Federalists, the "Association pour le volontariat en Europe" and the "Ligue Cardiologique belge". He was honoured by various countries with the "Grand-croix de l'ordre de Léopold II", "Grosses Bundesverdienstkreuz der Bundesrepublik Deutschland" and "Ordine al Merito della Republica Italiana"
