Summary
The documents illustrate the creation, development and crisis which marked the end of the European Youth Campaign (EYC) of which Phillipe Deshormes was Secretary General from 1953 to 1959. Included in the fonds are the minutes of meetings of governing bodies (Special Committee for Youth and Management Committee), activity reports of the General Secretariat of the North Atlantic Assembly, correspondence with politicians and representatives of the EYC, the European Movement and the American Committee for a United Europe. There are also some private documents and some copies of the journals produced by the EYC, Jeune Europe and Giovane Europa, the latter was edited by Fausta La Valle (she later became wife of Deshormes) as well as a large collection of photograph from various congresses and seminars organised by the National Secretariats of the EYC and notes written by Deshormes during the course of meetings of the North Atlantic Assembly
Biographical or historical data
As a young man Phillipe Deshorme began a degree in law, however he had to abandon his studies in 1942 because of the war. He was ordered to mobilise in 1940 as a civilian where he participated in the management of a village for adolescent refugees in Southern France. On his return to Belgium, he refused to carry out compulsory work service and so became a "réfractaire", and instead ran a youth camp which also welcomed Jewish refugees. In 1943 he joined the armed resistance in the Lower Semois and as a result was decorated for his service to his country during the war. In the post-war years, he was one of the founding members of the Belgian National Council of Youth and of the World Assembly of Youth (WAY). In 1951 he joined the EYC, an independent organisation launched by the European Movement, and became its secretary general in 1953. Deshormes was a member of the Socialist Party of Belgium since 1948 and he was nominated deputy director of the Bureau of Paul-Henri Spaak, then Minister of Foreign Affairs (1961-1962). As part of the Belgian delegation, he participated in the negotiations for the accession of the United Kingdom to the EEC. He later worked in various Belgian ministries on European issues until 1967, when he was elected secretary general of the North Atlantic Assembly.
