Summary
The fonds consists of a series of articles documenting the initial career of Fausta Deshormes as a journalist on issues such as education and university research on European integration at the Press and Information Service of the European Communities (later Directorate-General for Information, DGX, after the merger of the executives). After 1977, the papers concern her functions as Head of the unit, Women's Information Service. Through the DGX, the Commission encouraged the women's emancipation in the family, in work, in politics and in the media. The correspondence, notes, photos and even the video cassettes contained in the fonds provide ample evidence of this commitment. From this point of view, the FDLV fonds completes the "Femmes d'Europe" fonds, preserved in the HAEU. On Fausta Deshorme's retirement in 1992, the archives continue to document the activities of the various women's associations, diverse pro- women initiatives of the European Commission (Femmes d'Europe award) and the work of the DGX in the field
Biographical or historical data
Fausta Deshormes was born in Italy to a family of journalists but she later acquired Belgian nationality through marriage in 1958. After having completed her formal education in the faculty of law at the University of Rome, she began her career as journalist in 1956. Between 1954 and 1958 she was editor in chief of "Giovane Europa". In January 1961, she was recruited by the Service commun de presse et d'information of the European Communities. She was responsible for the "Information universitaire", where she worked for the promotion of teaching and scientific research on European integration. After her move to the Cabinet of the Vice-President of the EC Commission, she returned to the Directorate General for Information where she was responsible for women's press and information: the unit and later "Women's Information Service". The bulletin "Femmes d'Europe" was the main result of its activities. In 1992, Fausta Deshormes became honorary Director on her retirement. The Minerva award and the trophy of the National Council of Italian Women were two of the many international recognitions that she received.
