Summary
The four notebooks in this volume were composed in the early years of World War II. The thoughts, however, are not superficial reflections on current events but, instead, penetrate deeply into those events in order to ponder their philosophical import. Thus, these ponderings are instances of the meditation Heidegger keeps calling for as an antidote to the rampant technological attitude that views all things with a mere consumer mentality. This volume was the one that caused the most scandal when originally published in German, on account of the references to "world-Judaism." English readers, supplied with the full context, can now judge for themselves what use Heidegger is making of that term. Of the many other themes taken up, a prominent one is Russia, as Heidegger pursues an interest he says began in his student days with an effort to learn the Russian language.--, From publisher's description
