- La guerre d'Algérie a mobilisé près de deux millions d'hommes. Ces derniers gros bataillons de la République, engagés pour huit longues années, reviennent avec des séquelles et des blessures qui ne cessent aujourd'hui encore de les hanter. Les sentiments mêlés de honte ou de révolte que suscite ce conflit en soulignent toute l'ambiguïté : cette guerre continue de déranger les consciences. Fruit d'une enquête de vingt et un ans auprès de mille témoins et d'une connaissance du terrain, cet ouvrage restitue le vécu et la mémoire de cette dernière génération du feu. Appelés et réservistes, mais aussi professionnels, paras ou légionnaires, livrent ici, souvent pour la première fois, leur vision de cette guerre, que certains estiment avoir militairement gagnée. Gêneur qui empêche de commémorer en rond, l'historien ne peut que constater le traumatisme et sa pérennité. Achevé après un dernier voyage en Grande Kabylie, en avril 2015, en compagnie d'un des combattants cités, le présent ouvrage nourrit le vœu de guérir les plaies côté français et d'œuvrer à la réconciliation des deux rives de la Méditerranée.--
