Summary

The fonds consists of 375 dossiers, the first 44 of which, entitled "Miei Scritti", collect all the writings of Spinelli. Includes correspondence of Spinelli with W. Eichler, L. Einaudi, R. Morandi, P. Nenni, M. Rollier, E. Rossi, I. Silone, G. Usellini, L. Valiani, among others. Contains the text of the "Manifesto di Ventotene" (European Federation), political and philosophical essays, newspaper and journal articles, speeches, memoranda, interviews, and files on the creation of the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI). Also includes reports pertaining to his work within the European Parliament (Club du Crocodile) as well as his political correspondence, and files relating to his duties as Commissioner

Biographical or historical data

Altiero Spinelli was an anti-fascist activist, co-author during his exile of the "Manifesto di Ventotene" with E. Rossi and E. Colorni. He was co-founder of the Partito d'Azione in 1943 and acted as secretary from 1945 to 1946. He was then delegate general of the European Federalist Movement from 1948 to 1962; Executive Board member of the European Union of Federalists; founder and director of the Istituto Affari Internazionali until 1970; advisor of P. Nenni, the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1968-1969; European Commissioner for Industrial Policy and Research from 1970 to 1976; member of the Italian Parliament (Independent Left) from 1979 to 1986; European Parliament member from 1976 to 1986, and founder of the Club du Crocodile, a transnational association of federalist members of the European Parliament.
