Biographical or historical data

Originated from the Transport Service established on 1 October 1952, the Transport Division, was founded on 20 November. It was in charge of implementing the recommendations of a committee of national experts, created on 24 October 1952 with the aim of eliminating discrimination and disparities that distort competition within the common market The Treaty establishing the European Coal and Steel Community prohibited any discrimination based on nationality in transport rates of coal and steel products. The application of special rates in the interest of some companies producing coal and steel was subject to the prior approval of the Authority. Despite opposition from some member countries, the High Authority in 1955-56 accepted the Council agreement for the creation of international tariffs and harmonization of degression rates of transport for ECSC products. The crisis of coal and steel and the return of national protectionism after 1958, deprived the Transport Division of any new major initiative in this area.
