Biographical or historical data
Walter Lipgens studied history and philosophy at the University of Tübingen and got his doctorate in history in 1948. From 1948 to 1950 he was an assistant at the History Faculty of the University of Münster, and between 1951 and 1954 he was a research assistant in the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft", where he undertook research into the State and the Church in Münster from 1789 to 1855, which led him to Paris, Cologne and Münster. He taught part-time at the diplomatic school in Bonn from 1952 to 1960, and between 1955 and 1960, he was an associate researcher and member of the editorial committee for the review "Die Internationale Politik" published by the "Forschungsinstitut der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik". He married in 1956 and had three children. In 1960 he undertook his 'Habiliation' in modern European history at the University of Heidelberg. He worked as an associate professor at Heidelberg until 1967, specialising in the Reformation, German and European history from the 18th to 20th century, and European federalism. From 1964 to 1965 he was a visiting professor at the University of Bonn and in 1966/67 a member of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. From 1967 to 1976 he held the chair for modern European history at the University of Saarbrücken. In 1973 he became a member of the steering committee of the Centre international de formation européenne (Paris) and of the Institut für Europäische Politik (Bonn). In the same year he was named visiting professor of the University of Columbia. From 1976 to 1979 he was titular chair of modern European history at the newly founded European University Institute, and from 1979 until his death in April 1984 he taught at the University of Saarbrücken.
