Summary
About this Podcast: In a world where human reasoning is increasingly seen as contaminated by irrational errors and prejudices, social scientists must endeavour to engage with critical thinking and acknowledge bias. For tech philosopher Tom Chatfield, this involves attempting to be more reasonable about the world, using arguments and explanations to explain phenomena, while being part of critically engaged discourse in which social scientists are listening to other people and are prepared to engage with ideas with an open mind.In this podcast, Chatfield argues that to reason critically one must be alert to various forms of bias. Bias is not inherently toxic to critical thinking; indeed, it is contended that no knowledge escapes bias. For example, the height of Everest is surely an objective fact. But how is this measured? From land, from under the sea, including snow-caps, not including snow-caps? Knowledge has to exist in context. This necessary bias becomes problematic when we let "our emotional reaction double as truth, and be substituted for what we think of as truth." Chatfield goes on to explore how new digital realities interact with existing human biases, explaining that human bias can become embedded into our creations, before contemplating potential digital futures.--
