- The documents reflect the activities of the European Federalist Movement (MFE) in Poitou-Charentes from the 60's to the 90's. Even though there is little information on the political outcome of this regional section, the documents contribute in a meaningful way to depict the general features of federalist action in France. Of particular note is the correspondence between Pierre Debest and Jean-Pierre Gouzy, Head of the National Secretariat. - Biographical or historical data
- In 1962, Pierre Debest whilst continuing his professional career as a tax inspector, became a promoter of the Central West Regional Section of the European Federalist Movement (MFE). Since the late 1940s, this international organisation campaigned for the establishment of a European federation. However, financial difficulties and the effects of a greatly reduced number of activists at a local level, in line with the characteristics of the MFE's regional activities in France, led the members of the Central West Section in 1966 to concentrate their efforts on the Poitou-Charentes region. This region included the Deux-Sèvres, the Charente, the Charente-Maritime and the Vienne. It was in the chief city of Vienne, in Poitiers, that Pierre Debest lived and the Movement had its headquarters. While Pierre Debest played a remarkable role, the results the Central West Regional Section achieved were not commensurate with his efforts. For example Poitou-Charente had 43 activists in 1977 and was considered one of the most dynamic of the regional sections in France. Pierre Desbest retired from the MFE in 1994.
