The fonds consists of correspondence, minutes of meetings, working notes and printed material from the office of Pier Virgilio Dastoli when he was parliamentary assistant to Altiero Spinelli, and from the European Parliament's budgetary committee. Biographical or historical data
After graduating with a law degree, Pier Virgilio Dastoli became a researcher at the Institute for International Affairs (IAI) during the period 1972-1976. From 1976 to 1983 he was parliamentary assistant to Altiero Spinelli to the Italian Chamber of Deputies. When Spinelli held the Chair of the 'Independent Left' in the Chamber of Deputies (1976-1979), he was appointed Chief of the President's Bureau. He was then responsible for the work of the Foreign Affairs Committee and for the coordination of the parliamentary group. From 1976 to 1986 he was parliamentary assistant to Altiero Spinelli when he was elected to the European Parliament. Between 1979 and 1984 he was also the assistant of Felice Ippolito in the European Parliament and in this function he worked for the Research and Energy Committee. From 1984 to 1985 he was also political advisor to Mauro Ferri, the Italian representative in the Dooge Committee during the preparation of the Inter-Governmental Conference (IGC) on the Single European Act. From 1986 to 1987 Dastoli was special adviser to the Commission within the legal department and in the Bureau of the commissioner Ripa di Meana (1987-1988). As secretary general of the International European Movement from 1995 to 2001 under the presidency of Valery Giscard d'Estaing and Mario Soares, Dastoli promoted and facilitated the activities of the Permanent Forum of the Civil Society, for which he was the spokesman. He served as director of the European Commission Representation in Italy based in Rome.
