- "Die 1918 gegründete Zweite Polnische Republik verfolgte eine ambitionierte Wissenschaftspolitik, die Forschung als nationale Aufgabe formulierte. Die osteuropäische Dimension des polnischen Staates war im Zuge der nationalen Legitimation ein konstitutives Element seiner machtpolitischen Entfaltung. Aus historischer Erfahrung und geopolitischer Wahrnehmung heraus spielte der Osten in Wissenschaft und Publizistik eine zentrale Rolle, vor allem in der Auseinandersetzung mit dem historischen Territorium Polens in Gestalt der Polnisch-Litauischen Union und der östlichen Ausdehnung des polnischen Grossreiches. Litauen und die Ukraine waren somit wichtige Forschungsfelder, Russland stand jedoch im Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Hier ging es nicht nur um ein Wissen über das Land, von dem sich Polen permanent bedroht fühlte, sondern auch um die Deutungshoheit und den Anspruch einer Erklärungsfähigkeit des russischen Phänomens gegenüber dem Westen Europas. Ralph Schattkowsky zeigt, wie die Osteuropaforschung in Polen zwischen 1918 und 1939 eine enorme organisatorische Vielfalt und publizistische Breite entwickelte. Obwohl hoch politisiert, erreichte sie im internationalen Vergleich eine Spitzenposition und setzte gerade in der Beschäftigung mit dem nachrevolutionären Russland innovative Masstäbe."--
