- Nationalisme, minorité, identité, communauté... Ces termes qui ont fait un retour en force dans les années 1990 prennent une résonance particulière en Méditerranée orientale, des Balkans à l’Égypte en passant par la Turquie et le Proche-Orient. Il s’agit là d’un espace traversé par trois dynamiques politiques majeures : affirmations nationales vigoureuses pour compenser une légitimité étatique souvent précaire, mobilisation de l’ethnicité à l’intérieur des ensembles politiques existants, organisation transnationale des identités à la faveur du développement des diasporas et de l’essor de l’immigration. Tous ces phénomènes redéfinissent insensiblement la place de l’État, les relations entre groupes, bref, les contours du nationalisme sur le flanc oriental du bassin méditerranéen. Cet ouvrage collectif qui réunit spécialistes français et étrangers vise, dans une perspective liant histoire, sociologie et science politique, à repérer les mutations en cours. Sont tour à tour examinés le rôle de l’État comme agent de production du nationalisme à travers ses institutions, ses élites, son idéologie ; la persistance et la réactivation d’appartenances multiples (religieuses, ethniques) ; la constitution de communautés transnationales. L’ensemble des contributions permettent de mieux saisir les nombreuses dynamiques à l’œuvre dans cette Méditerranée orientale si fragile.--
