Summary
The fonds is divided into two parts corresponding to the areas of activity of Michel Richonnier at various times in his career. The first sector is employment, covering the period 1970-1981 during which Michel Richonnier worked for the DGII (Economics) and DGV (Social Affairs, Directorate for Employment). The second area regards Community action for health, including fight against cancer and AIDS. Documents (1986-1992) deal with his activity as advisor to the vice president of the Marin Commission and then back to the DGV as head of the Unit European Partnership for Action against Cancer (1987-1992)
Biographical or historical data
Engineer and economist, he graduated from the Ecole Centrale de Paris (1967) and got a PhD from the University of California (San Diego, 1972). He began his career at the European Commission as administrator in the Directorate for Economy (1973-1977) before being appointed Principal Administrator of the Directorate for Employment (1977-1981). From 1981 to 1984 he joined the French administration where he served as advisor to the Minister of Planning. Back in Brussels, he became advisor of commissioners Peter Sutherland and Manuel Marin (1985-1987) in the field of education and training at the launch of the Erasmus and Comett programmes. He was then in the Directorate General of Social Affairs serving as head of the Unit responsible for the program 'Europe against Cancer' (1987-1992) and later worked in the Directorate General Telecommunications, Information Market and Exploitation of Research, in the task force 'Multimedia Educational Software' and then in the programmes 'Telematics Applications' and 'Information Society Technologies' (1992-2002 ). In January 2003 he was appointed Director General of Education and Culture. He was also a teacher at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris (1981-1985) and at the College of Europe in Bruges (1986-1990)
