- Summary
-
- From Jules Mazarin (1602-1661), his contemporaries have said everything, in the tone of emphasis and admiration as well as the mode of detestation and mockery. Today, historians want to retain the figure of the statesman, the prowess of politics, the patience of the diplomat, the generosity of the patron and the taste of the collector. The success of the man who brought to France almost all his family, including his famous nieces, seems so admirable. However, the character rout as soon as it is brought back on the Italian lands which saw it being born. Audacious or defeated in negotiation, in a hurry and unreasonable in action, left and passionate in expression, Mazarin, in his relations with Rome and with Italy, is not always the one expected. Questioning the links of Mazarin with the Italy of Seicento makes it possible to better understand the man: they nuance the action of the minister, they specify the hopes of the patron, they explain the discretion of the Christian. His ministry is also the song of the swan, in the modern age, the intense political and artistic dialogue maintained by France and the French with Italy since the end of the Middle Ages. Contemplating the face of Mazarin returned by the Italian mirror, is finally revisit the notions of identity and homeland in Europe of the seventeenth century. the intense political and artistic dialogue maintained by France and the French with Italy since the end of the Middle Ages.
