Biographical or historical data
Klaus Meyer gained a doctorate in philosophy in 1952 and a degree in economics in 1955 at the University of Göttingen. In 1955 he entered the diplomatic service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was based in Bonn and in Paris. He was successively Deputy Chief of Staff of the President of the Commission Walter Hallstein from 1959 to 1967, Director of the Bundeskanzleramt of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1967 to 1969, Deputy Secretary General of the European Commission from 1969 to 1977, Director General for Development (DG VIII) of the Commission of the European Communities from 1977 to 1982, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Czechoslovakia from 1982 to 1985, and Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Germany at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris from 1985 to 1992. From 1991 to 1997 he taught political economy at the University of Leipzig.
