Summary
The fonds documents the life and activities of Matteo Ivan Lombardo, with the exception of the period he was in hiding and during the Resistance. Included are notes taht Lombardo took during his diplomatic missions and travels as well as during his function as a parliamentarian and a minister. A significant portion of documents concern the negotiations and the work carried out for the establishment of the European Defence Community (EDC) in which Lombardo took part as Head of the Italian delegation to the Paris Conference. Another set of files groups the material that Lombardo collected concerning the Eastern and Western Block, as well as a rich collection of writings, speeches and interviews
Biographical or historical data
Lombardo was born in Milan in 1902. He was an Italian politician and industralist who played a role in Italy in the reconstruction of the Socialist Party which was banned by fascism. Appointed Under-Secretary of the Ministry for Industry and Commerce in the Parri Cabinet (July 1945 - January 1946), Lombardo was confirmed in these functions in the first cabinet chaired by De Gasperi (January 1946 - July 1946). After the Congress of Florence in 1946, he was elected Secretary General of the Partito Socialista Italiano di Unità Proletaria (PSIUP) before being part of the Constituent Assembly. In 1947 he left the PSIUP and founded the "Movimento di Unità socialista" which joined the PSLI, later appointed PSDI. Re-elected in the first legislature, Lombardo was appointed Minister for Industry and Commerce in the fifth De Gasperi cabinet (June 1948 - January 1950) and Minister for Foreign Trade in the sixth De Gasperi cabinet (January 1950 - August 1951). Lombardo was also the Head of the Italian delegation to the Paris Conference for the creation of a European Defence Community (EDC) and President of the "Triennale" in Milan from 1949 to 1961. He died in Rome in 1980.
