- La question des bibliothèques, comme plus largement celle de l’information, alors que nous sommes plongés dans la « troisième révolution du livre », est bien l’une des interrogations de civilisation essentielles posées en notre début de IIIe millénaire. De l’Antiquité classique aux bibliothèques des grands monastères carolingiens, puis à la bibliothèque des rois de France, à celle de Mathias Corvin, à la Bibliothèque vaticane et aux monumentales collections italiennes et allemandes, cette histoire met en jeu des perspectives d’ordre intellectuel et scientifique, mais aussi politique : la bibliothèque est signe de distinction pour un prince qui sera autant le prince des muses que le prince des armes. L’histoire des bibliothèques est directement articulée avec l’histoire de la pensée, des idées, de la politique, de l’information, voire de l’architecture et de l’urbanisme. En adoptant un cadre chronologique large et en insistant sur la perspective comparatiste, l’auteur envisage la thématique en fonction des transformations du système général des médias au cours des siècles.--
