Summary
The fonds CEAB 5 covers, among others, the following subjects: reports of the Working Group for External Relations, trade relations with international organizations and third countries, the delegation of the High Authority in London, the Council for the association between the United Kingdom and the European Coal and Steel Community, the third countries' delegations to the High Authority. Although the external relations have become a branch of the General Secretariat in 1960, their records continued to form separate fonds
Biographical or historical data
It was not until February 3, 1955 that the Division "External Relations" was born in the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community. These functions were performed by different members and officials of the Organization. At that time third countries like United Kingdom, the United States, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, Austria and Japan had installed delegations to the High Authority. The ECSC also maintained relations with a number of international organizations, including the GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade), the OEEC (Organisation for European Economic Cooperation), the ILO (International Labour Office) and the Council of Europe. In early 1956, a permanent delegation of the High Authority was founded in London following the entry into force, on 23 September 1955, of the association agreement with the United Kingdom. After the administrative reorganization, the division was attached to the Foreign Relations Secretariat and in 1962 became a branch including areas and divisions covering subjects like trade policy, third countries, political affairs, international organizations, general affairs and protocol.
