Summary
The fonds comprises the documents of the Directorate General for Energy and Economic Questions and those of the Divisions Economic Questions and Agreements and Concentrations. Included are notes, memoranda, statistics and reports of meetings concerning economic programmes and general objectives of the Common Market for coal and steel, forecasts of production and consumption of energy (coal, nuclear, electricity), mining exploitation techniques and requests for authorization, cartel and concentration control concerning coal and steel enterprises
Biographical or historical data
The Divisions Economic Questions and Agreements and Concentrations were established on 1 October 1952. At the head of the first, Jean Monnet placed the economist Pierre Uri, as general coordinator of the Services of the High Authority. As director of the second Division, Monnet called a young German officer, Hamburger, independent-minded and uncompromising in the application of anti-cartel provisions of the Treaty, considered as a safeguard against reconcentration in Germany. After a slow start in the development of regulations, it appeared that the High Authority did not play a too restrictive role with respect to the concentrations in general (case of Lorraine-Escaut in France), and reconcentration in Germany in particular (case of GEORG Germany). On 1 July 1960 the Directorate General Economic Questions - Energy was created, including three Divisions: Economy, Agreements and Concentrations, Transports. On 1 July 1967, after the merger of the executives of the three European Communities, the Directorate General's activities (except for transports) were took over by three Directorates General of the Commission: Economic and Financial Affairs, Competition and Energy.
