Summary
Documentation collected by the Women's Information Service (1977-1992) for its publications, "Femmes d'Europe", "Suppléments" et "Cahiers", mainly comprising European Parliament and United Nations documents, press cuttings, reviews and studies. The fonds also includes documents produced by various women's associations concerning their activities and also items pertaining to the creation of the Women's Information Service itself
Biographical or historical data
Since 1962, the EC Commission, without having any particular mandate, entered into contact with various women's organisations through the intervention of DG X (Audio-visual, Information, Communication, Culture). This initiative was encouraged by the creation of several women's emancipation movements towards the end of the 1960's. The Commission requested a study on "Women and the European Community" and organised a conference of the various interested women's associations in March 1976 to present the results. The 120 delegates in attendance formulated the motion for the creation of a permanent structure guaranteeing regular information on women's issues. As a result of this motion, the unit "Information for Women's Organisations and Press" was established in November 1976. This unit was placed under the responsibility of Fausta Deshormes within DGX and began functioning in January 1977. While it was not officially recognised, it depended directly from the Director-General and was renamed "Women's Information Service". The unit had two main objectives, organising meetings on women's issues and to publish a series of bulletins providing information on and among women. The bulletin, "Femmes d'Europe", completed by supplements and monographic publications, became an official journal of women, so to speak. The last edition of "Femmes d'Europe" was published in July 1991 shortly before the retirement of Fausta Deshormes.
