Summary
By means of these documents the reconstruction of the history of the European Launchers and Development Organisation (ELDO) can be retraced. The documents provide details of the "EUROPA Rockets Series" projects and of the financial history of ELDO which ended with its liquidation. An interesting appendix gives account of the Guiana Space Centre activities in Kourou
Biographical or historical data
ELDO was established by a Convention signed by six European countries (Belgium, France, Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom) and Australia before 30 April 1962. It was created for the development and construction of space vehicle launchers and ancillary equipment after the collapse of the European Preparatory Commission for Space Research (COPERS) and the crisis of the European Space Research Organisation (ESRO). ELDO made relevant use of the installations of the Guiana Space Centre (CSG) in Kourou for the implementation of launchers. ESRO and later the European Space Agency (ESA) continued a number of ELDO programmes and used the CSG facilities, where ESA in particular developed the ARIANE-1 (ELA-1) launching programme.
