Biographical or historical data
Ernesto Rossi was born in Caserta, on 25 August 1897, finished his secondary schooling in 1915 and soon enlisted as a volunteer during the World War I. In 1920, he enrolled as a law student at the University of Siena and soon expressed a preference for the study of economics and history, while considering himself already a disciple of Gaetano Salvemini and Vilfredo Pareto. After the war he became a close friend of Salvemini and joined the group of young intellectuals in writing for the journal "L'Unita". With Salvemini, Carlo and Nello Rosselli and Nello Traquandi, Rossi founded the "Circolo di Cultura", which in three years, became the centre of opposition to fascism before being destroyed in 1924 by the "squadristi". After the assassination of Matteotti, Ernesto Rossi became one of the leaders of "Italia libera", a secret organization composed of veterans and anti-fascists. He joined the National Alliance Giovanni Amendola and published the first clandestine newspaper in opposition to fascism, "Non mollare". Arrested and released numerous times by the organisation for the repression of anti-fascism (OVRA), Rossi was forced to emigrate to France in June 1925. On his return to Italy, he was given a chair of economics at the Technical Institute of Bergamo and continued his work of propaganda against fascism. In 1929, together with Carlo Rosselli, Emilio Lussu, Salvemini, Tarchiani, Cianca and Bauer, he founded the republican anti-fascist movement "Giustizia e Liberta", where he was a member of the Executive Committee until his imprisonment in the Regina Coeli prison. Released due to the various amnesties in 1939, he was placed under house arrest (confino) on the island of Ventotene. Here, in 1941, he wrote, in collaboration with Spinelli and Eugenio Colorni, the Manifesto, which laid the foundations of the European Federalist Movement. After the armistice in September 1943, he went into exile in Switzerland. In 1945 he returned to Italy, he took part in the insurrection of Milan as a member of the Executive of the Action Party of Northern Italy. he was then appointed under-secretary at the Ministry of Reconstruction during the Parri Government and participated in the work of the Consulta. From 1946 to 1958 he was president of the Azienda Rilievo Alienazione Residuati. During this period his activity as a journalist was particularly fruitful and he collaborated with "Il Mondo" of Pannunzio (1949-1962) and then with "L'Astrolabio" by Parri (1963-67). As executor of G. Salvemini, Rossi also coordinated the activities of the Committee responsible for the publication of the complete works of Salvemini. Rossi died on the 9 February 1967.
