- Biographical or historical data
- When he was sixteen, Emanuele Gazzo, eager to "see the world" sailed as a cabin boy on a ship carrying emigrants from Palestine to South America. On his return to Italy, he graduated with a degree in economics. However, his interest in poetry and literature led him to start a small publishing house of primarily foreign authors, French and American, whom at the time the fascist regime frowned upon. But it was his publishing of a book by the Florentine historian Nello Rosselli (murdered shortly after his brother Carlo by the same militia of "cagoule", a subversive offshoot of the French right) which caused him problems with censorship. When the Second World War broke out, Gazzo was mobilized as a naval officer. In 1943 he went underground and within the Resistence he adhered to the ideas of Roselli's 'liberal socialism'. In 1945, at the end of the war, Gazzo was offered the post of editor and special correspondent for the Italian News Agency ANSA. He held this position until 1953, when he decided to follow Count Riccardi in the new enterprise of "Agence Europe", a publication specialising in European issues which was based in Luxembourg. In March 1953, the first newsletter was issued, which contained an interview with Paul-Henri Spaak. His writings, which show great skill, lucidity and have the merit of being completely based on primary sources, accompanied the various stages in the process for European integration for over forty years.
