Biographical or historical data
Edoardo Martino obtained his degree at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and was professor of philosophy and history in secondary schools. At the outbreak of war in Italy, he was called up for military duty. He participated in the Russian campaign and was caught up in the 1943 retreat. In September 1943, Martino joined the Christian Democrats and at the same time aligned himself with the Resistance Movement and became active in the liberation struggle in the Montferrat region where he organized the 11th Partisan Division, "Patria" where he was camp commandant under the pseudonym "Malerba". In the postwar period he was professor and president of the Higher Institute of Science in Public Opinion of the International University of Social Sciences "Pro Deo" in Rome. In the Piedmont region, during this period, Martino founded a bi-weekly literary and political, review, "Poligono", of which he became chief editor. Appointed assistant secretary to the Council Presidency in the fourth government led by De Gasperi (1947), Martino was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies without interruption from 1948 to 1963. During this period he contributed to many important changes within the state apparatus and became member of the Italian delegation to the UN General Assembly and representative of the Italian Assembly to the European Parliamentary Assembly in Strasbourg. In 1964 he was elected president of the Political Commission of the European Parliament, a position he held until 1967, when he became European Commissioner. At the Commission, he was given responsibility for external relations and held the Presidency of the Group 'External Relations and Development Aid'. After leaving the Commission in Brussels, Martino finished his career at the Institute of European Studies 'Alcide De Gasperi' in Rome.

Documentation annexed to the fonds includes a large collection of press cuttings on Italian and European political and social issues as well as extracts of periodicals. Also included are documents of the European Parliament, annual reports on the ECC activities, bulletins of the European Economic Community, documentation on agreements between the EEC, Turkey and African countries, brochures, extracts, speeches.
