- Über die Japanpolitik der DDR ist wenig bekannt, obwohl sie sowohl in politischer als auch in wirtschaftlicher Hinsicht für den SED-Staat von großer Bedeutung war. Nach bereits frühen wirtschaftlichen Kontakten in den späten 1950er Jahren regte sich rasch die Hoffnung, mithilfe Japans die Außenpolitische Blockade des westlichen Lagers zu durchbrechen. Nach anfänglichem Scheitern und damit verbundenem, abflauendem Interesse gewann Japan mit seinem rapiden Aufstieg zur Wirtschaftsmacht an neuem Glanz. Eine neue Japanstrategie, günstige politische Entwicklungen in Japan und glückliche persönliche Bekanntschaften ebneten den Weg für den ersten Staatsbesuch Honeckers in einem Land des kapitalistischen Lagers. Der erhoffte politische und wirtschaftliche Aufstieg der DDR blieb jedoch aus. Letzterer auch trotz massiver Bemühungen das CoCom-Embargo mithilfe japanischer Firmen zu umgehen. --
