Summary
The fonds consists of 15 files covering, with notable gaps, the years 1967 to 1996. The material comprises meetings of the presidium and of the executive committee, documents pertaining to the international relations of the Secretariat-General, the budget and the activities of the general assemblies. The fonds also includes a sizeable quantity of publications produced by the Bureau Européen de Coordination des Organisations Internationales de Jeunesse (BEC), such as information bulletins, activity reports, as well as the so called "Flash-BEC" and "BEC INFO"
Biographical or historical data
The Bureau Européen de Coordination des Organisations Internationales de Jeunesse was created in 1969 when international non-governmental youth organisations (Organisations internationales non-gouvernementales de jeunesse, OINGJ) were grouped under the "Secrétariat de liaison des mouvements de jeunesse". It had its offices in Brussels and its goal was to coordinate the needs of the member organisations. The Bureau's activities included "information", "education" and "external relations". It worked closely with all the European institutions but in particular with the Council of Europe. The number of organisations operating under the umbrella of the Bureau Européen de Coordination des Organisations Internationales de Jeunesse increased notably (it went from seven original member organisations to thirty by 1980). In 1977, the BEC revised both its statute and its organisational structure. The highest level in the Bureau was the General Assembly which met every two years. It elected a "presidium" that organised biennial meetings of the executive committee where all member organisations were represented. The presidium was the 'think tank' and the motor of the BEC, with control over the Secretariat-General. The BEC operated in close cooperation with the Council of European National Youth Committees (CENYC). In 1996, it merged with the CENYC and the Youth Forum of European Communities (YFEU) which led to the creation of the Forum Européen de la Jeunesse, which still acts as the platform for European youth movements.
