- Biographical or historical data
- Beniamino (Bino) Olivi gained a degree in Law from the University of Padua in 1946, and a political economy degree from the University of Venice (1947-1948). He then became assistant professor of Rodolfo De Nova at the University of Pavia where he became interested in Comparative Law (1948-1950). He served as a judge at the Court of Milan (1950-1958). He was recruited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be part of an Italian delegation involved in the negotiations of the Common Market and of Euratom. In 1958, he became principal administrator at the Directorate-General for Competition of the EEC in particular in the harmonisation of laws (DG IV). From January 1960 he is Deputy Chief of the Vice-President of the Commission, Giuseppe Caron, responsible of the press. In spring 1961, he became spokesman of the Commission (1961-1979) and director of the press service. In 1967, he was appointed Director General. In 1979, he was advisor as well as president of the group responsible for drafting a report on a European Foundation project. He represented the Commission in the negotiations on the foundation (1980-1982) and then in the preparatory committee of the foundation whose seat was set in Paris (1982-1987). After his retirement from the Commission, Bino Olivi became an international adviser for Télédiffusion France (TDF) and Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) while mantaining his academic commitments both in Italy and in France.
