Biographical or historical data
The idea of the Association européenne des enseignants was conceived in March 1956 during a seminar of the Centre international de formation européenne (CIFE) with the purpose to bring together "teachers willing to work towards the creation of a European Federation" and to deepen "their understanding of the problems in Europe". The Association was ratified at the Paris Congress in July 1956 and was supported by the European Community (EC), as well as by various Ministries of Education, and over time this support allowed it to expand the number of sectors in which it acts. From 1970, the Association was able to reinforce its ties with the Campaign for European Civic Education of the European Cultural Centre, Geneva, and in the same decade it increased the number of European initiatives in education. These changes resulted from the Report on Community Education Policy (1973) by Professor Henri Janne, the establishment of the Education Committee (June 1974), and the adoption of the first Community Programme of Action for Education (1976). Under these conditions, the the Association européenne des enseignants was able to have a role in the European Centre of Education, created in November 1974, and acquired a new General Secretariat. Following the Single European Act (1986), education and training programmes have increased, and the EAT has been able to play a significant role in European Commission projects. Finally, in 1992, education was granted legal status under the Treaty on European Union (1992), with a particular emphasis on building a knowledge- and information-based society, and in 2000, the Lisbon European Council put pedagogy at the heart of economic and social strategy.
